A stock split or stock divide increases or decreases the number of shares in a public company. The price is adjusted such that the before and after market capitalization of the company remains the same and dilution does not occur. Options and warrants are included.

What happens at tax time if your stock split?
Q. Let's say you owned 4 shares of XYZ corp. The shares are valued at $50 per unit. Total worth is $200 (4 shares x $50). Let's say the stock does a 2 for one split. You now have 6 shares. However, after a split the price goes down per share. Now, it's worth $33.33 per share. Now, let's say you decide to sell one share. Come tax time, how do you list the original buy price and sell price? Buy = $50 Sell = $33.33 It looks like you lost money but you really didn't.

A. Taxes for stocks are done on schedule D . You will list how many shares you sold and the total price you received , then you will list the purchase price for them based on the split adjusted cost basis . A 2 for 1 split would give you 8 shares for the 4 , And the $200 purchase price would now be divided by 8 instead of 4 > the split adjusted price is $25 each . You will pay taxes on capital gains if the sell price is more than the purchase or it will be a write off if the sell price is less . >

After a stock split, should I re-enter the stock if I made money on it?
Q. I recently bought stock in a company that I researched extensively. I bought at 48 and sold at 51. Within a week it went to 61 then split. I exited too early but I am considering buying back in.

A. You site two reasons to "re-enter the stock." Neither are valid reasons for re-entering. A stock split is meaningless to direction and merely attracts more attention to the stock that will soon wane. Something else must draw investors, other than an advertisement of lower-priced shares or bookkeeping adjustment. Whether you made money or not, has nothing to do with anything concerning the stock or the market or whether you should re-purchase.

How Many Times Would McDonald's stock split in 20yrs?
Q. I would like to know how many times would a stock like McDonald split in 20yrs. It seems that its such a old company that they dont make money, because the stock hardly makes and moves. Thanks
Asked by nobohiku - Mon Feb 12 08:45:25 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would estimate MCD will split 2x in the NEXT 20 years. I base this on the following: MCD has split 3 times in the past 20 years and and 6 times in the 20 year period prior to that. So the pace of splits is slowing. However, MCD is close to breaking out to NEW all time highs. I would expect another split as it approaches 100 in the next few years and then 1 more split before 2027.
