How does the housing market affect the stock market so much?
Q. I heard that the housing market being low in sales and with the forclousure market crashing, it is affecting investors so much that they are moving money out of equities (stocks) and investing more in safer investments. Thats why the stock market has been down so much in the past week. How does this happen? I was reading about it, but I didn't really understand. Are investors pulling out their stocks from big lenders? How exactly does it affect the stock market? I need help understanding it in normal terms that make sense. Please advise, thank you!!

A. It's purely psychological. The "housing market" is really the "real estate" market which accounts for a lot of money. There is also a lot of related industries which is affected if the real estate market goes down. First is the home builders or construction industry (contractors), then there is the materials suppliers, then the mortgage industry which makes loans to buyers and then there's the real estate agents, title companies, escrow companies, home insurance companies, furniture companies - all their jobs hang on how well the housing market is doing. They were in fear for the past 2 years when the housing or real estate market peaked and began sliding down. Investors in the stock market finally decided that there is too much fear and… [cont.]

Channel stock market capital gains through my incorporated business?
Q. Hello, I am the CEO of a small web design company. I'm also heavily invested in the stock market. I'm wondering if it is possible to channel my capital gains that I make through the stock market through my small, incorporated S Corporation, to save on taxes. Currently, short term capital gains in the stock market are upwards of 35-40 % for larger gains. Thats just way too much to be giving to the government. Thanks if anyone can help.
Asked by fidesfortitudo - Sun Dec 23 22:56:44 2007 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. You won't save any taxes as the profits will pass directly to your tax return in the same manner as they would if you recorded them direcly on Schedule D. In fact, they WILL go on Schedule D after they pass through the S-Corp. Income or loss in an S-Corp passes directly to your individual income tax return in the same characterization as it would have if the S-Corp did not exist. Capital gains within the S-Corp would be computed on Form 1120-S Schedule D and then flow to the shareholders via Schedule K-1 on lines 7 and 8a - 8c. Those amounts would then pass to the appropriate lines on Form 1040 Schedule D. ST gains are taxed at your marginal rate. The highest marginal rate is 35% and you'd be making a LOT of money for it to hit that… [cont.]

A. Here's a couple excerpts from Investopedia: [About Stocks] "A holder of stock (a shareholder) has a claim to a part of the corporation's assets and earnings. In other words, a shareholder is an owner of a company. Ownership is determined by the number of shares a person owns relative to the number of outstanding shares. For example, if a company has 1,000 shares of stock outstanding and one person owns 100 shares, that person would own and have claim to 10% of the company's assets." [About the Stock Market] "The market in which shares are issued and traded either through exchanges or over-the-counter markets. A. The answer remains to be seen. Many jobs are created by businesses that borrow money. Many businesses rely on lines of credit, even to make payroll-- the money rolls in and everything balances a week later. What has happened is that the credit market has frozen. This makes expansion only possible with cash- again, many business use credit. It they need to wait to expand, hiring slows and low income people have fewer job opportunities. The other issue going on is inflation- our dollar continues to be worth less. This makes importing everything more expensive. It makes our exports more attractive, but most of our factories are already closed and not making anything. The other issue is that oil is traded in dollars. When the… [cont.]

How do I get involved in the stock market?
Q. I want to invest but i dont know how much when & where... Basically, I have little knowledge of how the stock market works, and I just want to get started. What I really want to know is how stocks and the stock market works, how to play the market - things like that. In fact, if there's recommended reading on the subject for beginners, that'd be great too. Any other advice about particular stocks, or even advice about other preferable investment options, would also be greatly appreciated.

A. the stock market and people who manage pension funds directly influence the property market in so much as they invest heavily in it. It has a history of out performing the FT100 etc. With a decline in the property market this will affect the returns of the investors in funds and pension funds and so affect the stock market. Hope that made sense.

A. I think it's great that you're getting into stock investing. And certainly, it's always great to practice before taking the plunge fully. However, be aware that paper trading with no money and actually investing with your own real money are two different things. They may seem like they are the same, but many first-time investors get overcome by their emotions when they first start investing with their own money, even if they've practiced first with paper trading. When you're paper trading, your emotions aren't in full force since you have nothing to lose except maybe some bragging rights if "your" stocks go down. However, if you've got real money on the line, you'll find that you start valuing things differently and your emotions get… [cont.]

A. Congratulations on getting started. It ll help you more than you know! Your first dollars should be spent on getting educated on investing. You don't have to train to trade them professionally, but we are talking about your future here. So the more you learn, the more it'll help you! So let's start there. You ask a very broad question, so be prepared for a pretty long answer. Just take it in chunks! How to invest depends on what you already know. We'll assume that you're beginning! A good primer is How to Make Money in Stocks by William O'Neil. You can get it cheap just about anywhere. It s widely available new or used. Asked by Splash - Mon Feb 18 01:33:29 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Essentially all the companies listed are publicly traded forms of a joint stock company. Whereby the company is run with the shareholder's interests in mind. The companies issue shares at a certain price to raise capital and people either buy it and drive up the price or they don't. There's different kinds of shares, but they all basically confer partial ownership of the company which is why you can sell your shares to other people in speculative efforts. Anyway, could write 10 pages about it so look on wikipedia for further clarification. I'll just say there are other regulations like Mutual funds can only own a certain percentage of companies which prevents billion dollar funds from engaging in takeovers.

A. this is a very complicated question so I am going to over simplify it. The Stock market is a "place" (I say place even though it is not really a place) where people can buy or sell stock. Stock is ownership of a company. to get rich of the stock market there are two ways to invest in the stock market that i will call traditional and gambling. in traditional you assume that the market will go up and down but in the long run it will go up and it will go up quite a bit and if you invest in such a way that allows you to invest in the whole market you will make some pretty good returns. in gambling (which may be a bad name for it) you pick a few stocks that you think will go up big over a short amount of time then what you can do is buy what… [cont.]

A. Unfortunately, the answer is probably Tobacco . US Tobacco was the most profitable public company of the 20th century. It had a near monopoly on smokeless tobacco. With inelastic demand, monopoly pricing, extremely low costs and an addicted customer base, they made enormous amounts of money. They were not as exposed to anti-tobacco litigation, though have recently had some anti-trust problems. This company is what the cocaine cartels would look like if we could see their books.

A. The first thing you need to do is read. Ben Graham's the intelligent investor is a good place to start and then look at books on Warren Buffets methods. Dont do momentum investing or day trading its to risky and the commisions will kill your returns. The best way to go is value investing all the way. I usually look intially for companies with 15 percent return on equity for at least 5 years and a p/e ration of between 5 and 15. Also look for a history of positive earnings. Thats real basic and then you will need to learn to read income statements, balance sheets, and understand cash flow and stuff but thats someplace to start. A. I can't tell you how to loose in the market because I don't. To be a good trader/investor you need 1 - A written sound trading/investment plan with rules that will not only help you but more importantly protect you, mostly from yourself. 2 - Sufficient trading/investment capital. Use your own money, there s no need to go into debt so that you trade/invest. 3 - A written money management program in place. Remember never invest 100% of your capital into any one security and never have 100% of your capital invested. 4 A full and complete understanding of the rules & regulations of the industry. If you don't have all of the above, you'll always be a looser. Remember you don't have to be right 100% of the time, just 60% and you can make a… [cont.]

How will the global stock market crisis affect us all and is there a solution?
Q. I live on the poor side of the rich-poor divide and am starting to fret about the global stock market crisis, which seems to be on a never-ending slippery slide. I live with my parents who have quite a bit of debt and aren't high-earners, I think my dad owns a few shares in the company he works for, but not much. How is all of this going to affect the rich and poor classes and what would be a solution in trying to stabalise the slump? How would a solution affect the rich and poor classes? If a solution is not found, what will happen?
