A. If you want to impress your teacher: "I saved $200 and since I am young I want to make right now a long term risky investment, what would be your suggestion?" If you want to impress your colleagues: "What are the tricks companies can do to artificially increase their stock value? Is it effective?" and at least, if you want to surprise the palestrant: "Are you happy being a financial advisor?" Good luck ;)

A. I strongly recommend mutual funds to beginners like yourself. Picking individual stocks it just too risky and requires serious analytical skills to do right.

How does the stock market effect the pharmaceuticals industry?
Q. How does the stock market effect the Pharmaceutical Industry? How does the stock market effect the pharmaceuticals industry? Do you think it is moral (lets not get philosophical with the definition of moral) to invest in the companies producing medication, knowing that it could sway the industry itself? Do you think there is a relationship between the stock prices of companies like Pfizer, GSK, and Roche and the timeliness of delivery and effectiveness of the medicines they provide?

How does the stock market of today resemble the stock market of the past?
Q. The way a lot of people paint it, the stock market was just a safe, ol' bird you could get rich on if you stuck your money in there for 40 years. I have only a 5 year history learning about and investing in stocks, but feel like its every day a roller coaster. What was it like in say the 60's, 70's, 80's etc. or before if you were around then?

Did the stock market crash because the banks were failing? How do failing stocks affect the economy?
Q. In words that I will be able to understand, can anyone explain to me the correlation between the banks, the housing crisis, and the stock market. And how does the stock market affect the economy itself? I am just beginning to understand what the stock market is, so numbers and statistics are really not helpful.

A. Basically it comes down to this: 1. Banks loaned money or gave credit to so-called 'high risk' people who were less likely to pay their debts, hoping that they would run into difficulty and be forced to pay a higher interest rate on the loans and increase the profitability of the loan. 2. Instead of being able to pay when the interest rates increased, lots of these people were unable to continue to pay the higher interest payments, so they defaulted on their loans and were forced into bankruptcy. 3. The banks, who expected customers to keep paying the high interest, were faced with credit cards and loans that were losing money due to huge amounts of bankruptcy. 4. The banks had no money to loan to home buyers. 5. As businesses get… [cont.]

Channel stock market capital gains through my incorporated business?
Q. Hello, I am the CEO of a small web design company. I'm also heavily invested in the stock market. I'm wondering if it is possible to channel my capital gains that I make through the stock market through my small, incorporated S Corporation, to save on taxes. Currently, short term capital gains in the stock market are upwards of 35-40 % for larger gains. Thats just way too much to be giving to the government. Thanks if anyone can help.
Asked by fidesfortitudo - Sun Dec 23 22:56:44 2007 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. You won't save any taxes as the profits will pass directly to your tax return in the same manner as they would if you recorded them direcly on Schedule D. In fact, they WILL go on Schedule D after they pass through the S-Corp. Income or loss in an S-Corp passes directly to your individual income tax return in the same characterization as it would have if the S-Corp did not exist. Capital gains within the S-Corp would be computed on Form 1120-S Schedule D and then flow to the shareholders via Schedule K-1 on lines 7 and 8a - 8c. Those amounts would then pass to the appropriate lines on Form 1040 Schedule D. ST gains are taxed at your marginal rate. The highest marginal rate is 35% and you'd be making a LOT of money for it to hit that… [cont.]

A. The answer remains to be seen. Many jobs are created by businesses that borrow money. Many businesses rely on lines of credit, even to make payroll-- the money rolls in and everything balances a week later. What has happened is that the credit market has frozen. This makes expansion only possible with cash- again, many business use credit. It they need to wait to expand, hiring slows and low income people have fewer job opportunities. The other issue going on is inflation- our dollar continues to be worth less. This makes importing everything more expensive. It makes our exports more attractive, but most of our factories are already closed and not making anything. The other issue is that oil is traded in dollars. When the… [cont.]

A. the stock market and people who manage pension funds directly influence the property market in so much as they invest heavily in it. It has a history of out performing the FT100 etc. With a decline in the property market this will affect the returns of the investors in funds and pension funds and so affect the stock market. Hope that made sense.

A. I am a pensuioner and I live off the income from stocks and shares from the stock market. If no one invested ever no one woudl be able to take risks and we woudl never havd any innovation or make any progress. Just as the government invests for us in road so we can drive on them, money is investe din companies so they can build houses, develop a new car, market a new flavour of pepsi ... then often years later when they make a profit the companies share out the profit to the shareholders (like me). The Banks also lend money but they charge more than shareholders 9we give our money "free") and they pay themselves too much leaving too little to keep the machine going ... thats roughly how it works...

In the stock market, what are the general dynamics when there is a company acquisition?
Q. Let's suppose that 2 companies are listed in the stock market, and there is an acquisition: - What dynamic trends do we see? Does the buyer stock go up or down? - What happens to the stock of the company that is being bought? Do the companies merge in one stock symbol? - Any other stuff you wish to share about your acquisition experience?

A. purchasing company stock goes down. target company goes up. Simple as that. It is based on the idea that during the negotiation, the company being bought always knwo more about its prospects and will seek to extract as much value as possible out of the transaction, leaving the acquirer with the situation of having overpaid.

Q. Anything about the stock market?
Asked by Splash - Mon Feb 18 01:33:29 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Essentially all the companies listed are publicly traded forms of a joint stock company. Whereby the company is run with the shareholder's interests in mind. The companies issue shares at a certain price to raise capital and people either buy it and drive up the price or they don't. There's different kinds of shares, but they all basically confer partial ownership of the company which is why you can sell your shares to other people in speculative efforts. Anyway, could write 10 pages about it so look on wikipedia for further clarification. I'll just say there are other regulations like Mutual funds can only own a certain percentage of companies which prevents billion dollar funds from engaging in takeovers.

A. If you're a rookie in investing or stocks, go to www.finance.yahoo.com. Open up a portfolio without using real money. You can give yourself as much or as little money to try out the market. The stocks you want to focus on is consumer staples, consumer discretionary, and healthcare. These are defensive stocks that will survive through good and bad times. Most of my positions are in these stocks. Some names include 3M, Procter & Gamble, Kimberly Clark, Exxon Mobil, Walmart, Costco. Everybody's got to eat and wipe their butts regardless of the state of economy. Many of these companies survived through the Great Depression. That's the benefits. A. If you acquired the stock from source other than buying the shares yourself, you should take the paper stock certificate to a discount broker. Perhaps, your shares were acquired through inheritance or a gift? Stocks are sold on an exchange and the sell is just like buying or selling a product at an auction.
