Why are the European stock markets so dependent on the US stock markets?
Q. I have been tracking the European markets on Yahoo Finance. Of course their day starts well ahead of the US markets. It appears that things are somewhat steady over there before 0930EST, but once the volatile American markets get going the European markets follow suit, almost a mirror image.

A. you need to look at macro economic data such as proportion of economic activity that is export oriented [high in Germany, for example] and who those exports go to. America is a huge importer [with some help from our Canadian neighbors]. The North American economy is about the same size as the entire European economy [higher GDP/capita in North America makes up for fewer people]. And there are a lot of companies from both continents with operations in the other continent. *** If Europeans want to move away from this, they need to develop their own economies more and rely less on exports to North America as a source of jobs.
