A stock market is a public market for the trading of company stock and derivatives at an agreed price; these are securities listed on a stock exchange as well as those only traded privately. The size of the world stock market was estimated at about $36.6 trillion US at the beginning of October 2008 . The total world derivatives market has been estimated at about $791 trillion face or nominal value, 11 times the size of the entire world economy. The value of the derivatives market, because it is stated in terms of notional values, cannot be directly compared to a stock or a fixed income security, which traditionally refers to an actual value. Moreover, the vast majority of derivatives 'cancel' each other out (i.e., a derivative 'bet' on an event occurring is offset by a comparable derivative 'bet' on the event not occurring.). Many such relatively illiquid securities are valued as marked to model, rather than an actual market price. The stocks are listed and traded on stock exchanges which are entities a corporation or mutual organization specialized in the business of bringing buyers and sellers of the organizations to a listing of stocks and securities together. The stock market in the United States includes the trading of all securities listed on the NYSE, the NASDAQ, the Amex, as well as on the many regional exchanges, e.g. OTCBB and Pink Sheets. European examples of stock exchanges include the London Stock Exchange, the Deutsche Börse and the Paris Bourse, now part of Euronext. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Stock market" Was the American stock market plunge reason to be nervous or just a buying opportunity? Q. One of the reasons I asked was also because I'm still a rookie at investing and wanted to hear some opinions. I'm as green as can be when it comes to stock market investing, and I understand people lost lots of money, but is the drop really a reason to be nervous? I understand it's a sign there might be a change in the lending market, but is this a reason to be nervous about investing in the stock market or to start trading all your stocks? I mean it's not like the America is an unstable country. It's no reason to start pulling all of your money out of the stock market, right? This is a proven market that should stabilize itself in a while, no? Is this just an opportunity to buy cheap stocks? Chime in on the stock market plunge? Asked by Average Joe - Fri Aug 10 05:40:18 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. There certainly is reason to believe that stocks might get cheaper still. America is not so stable as you might have imagined. It is fueled by debt. Now that debt has become shall we say unstable, the fuel supply might be facing an interruption. This might just be the beginning. On the plus side most corporations are fairly healthy and stock valuations are not out of line with reality. But none of that will really matter all that much if people stop spending, which there are indications that they are. Answered by muncie birder - Fri Aug 10 07:26:43 2007 What is the relationship between one stock market and another foreign stock market? Q. I'm an Indonesian and I am told that my country stock market going down has something to do with US's stock market going down. Can anyone please help me explain the relationship? Or if this is true at all? Thanks a lot! Asked by 5p4rk - Sat Aug 18 11:01:38 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. This is called arbitrage, when stocks get cheaper in one market, investors will not buy in another unless the price is driven down also. There are of course other reasons, the main one is that economies are interrelated around the world and when an economy is sneezing, the neighbor one is in danger of catching a cold. Stock markets rise and fall in "sympathy" with each other, even stock investors can show love ;-) Answered by pgreen - Sat Aug 18 11:11:45 2007 Around when will the stock market rebound into a primary bull market?
Q. I've heard a lot of people say that the economy will start to recover in the second half of 2009. I've also heard that the stock market is 6 to 9 months ahead of the economy. Does that mean that the stock market will turn bullish earlier than mid 2009, or is that when the stock market will bottom out? Asked by karenchii - Sun Feb 8 15:02:30 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. It will turn around when everybody who is scared has dumped their stock. The only way to know is to watch the charts. Based on past history, the turn will be a wide saucer, rather than the letter V. There is no way to predict exactly what month this will happen, so people who are "saying" things like this are trying to sound important and should be ignored.
